ALLEGED GIFTS
BREACH OF PROMISE ACTION. JUDGMENT AT WANGANUI. The attention of the United Press Association has been drawn by Mr. W. E. Leicester, counsel for Miss Gladys Mjay Ritchie, to a statement contained in the report of her breach of promise action against William Thomas Ridd, heard in the Supreme Court at Wanganui on August 19 and ( 20 before His Honour the Chief Justice. In giving judgment for £6OO in favour of Miss Ritchie His Honour made reference to evidence given by the defendant that between 1927 and 1931 he had made gifts to the equivalent value of £9OO to Miss Ritchie, who in her evidence emphatically denied that such gifts had been made.
It has been represented to the Press Association that the report of the judgment might be read as implying that the gifts had been made, though actually the Chief Justice made no finding whatever in regard to the matter. The Press Association expresses its regret if the report issued by it was capable of any implication that the Chief Justice found that the alleged gifts had been made to Miss Ritchie.
