SHOPPING WEEK?

SUGGESTION FOR BAND CONTEST. RETAILERS’ ASSOCIATION MEETS.. A suggestion that the holding of the national band contest at New Plymouth next February would be a .favourable opportunity for special efforts .to be made by the retailers of the town was made at a meeting of the executive of the New Plymouth Retailers’ Association on Monday. . The meeting decided to inquire from any similar organisation at Timaru as to what was done when the band contest was held there. It was pointed out by the chairman that the drapers of New Plymouth had tacitly decided to begin their seasonal sales during the week of the contest and he considered that other retailers might care to follow suit. February was admittedly not the best month in the year for the retail traders, but if a shopping week embracing all activities was to be held much good would probably result. It was decided to bring down suggestions for the meeting and to formulate then some scheme of likely assistance to traders. In reply to representations made by the association to the Chamber of Commerce, that the general elections should be held in November so as not to disturb the Christmas trade, it was stated that the Associated Chambers had taken the question up and that it was also concerning the drapers and grocers. The question of the necessity of a compulsory half holiday on election day was also the subject of representation by the association and it was stated, in the reply from the Chamber of Commerce, that the necessity for empowering legislation to

overcome the half holiday position might prevent the Government’s action on the eve of an election. It was decided to express appreciation to the New Plymouth Borough' Council of its street lighting scheme. . Those present at the meeting were Messrs. E. White (chairman), C. .S. Cottam, L. K. Thompson, H. W. Broome, G. W. Haughton, C. E. Morshead and V. R. Simpkiss. . . ,
