CINEMA PROGRAMME

STATE THEATRE, NEW PLYMOUTH. BREWSTER’S MILLIONS.” The screen version of a play which ran for a year on the London stage scarcely needs recommendation, but it can be said of “Brewster’s Millions,” th«< present attraction at the State Theatre, New Plymouth, that the addition of special songs and dance numbers has added to the attractiveness of the play, without in any . way sacrificing the humour which made the original such a success. Laughter and spectacle are both abundantly present in the picture, which richly deserves, a full measure of public patronage. Jack Buchanan is Brewster, the penniless young man whj inherits half a million and then fir"'» he has to spend it in six months to-innerit another fortune of six millions/and he gives an excellent characterisation of the harassed Brewster. Lili. Damita has the femine lead, and in her first British talkie is all that a musicdl comedy star should be, effervescent and tuneful. British pictures of the type are particularly rich in supporting characters, and “Brewster’s Millions” is no exception. Fred Emeny, Amy Viness, Sydney Fairbrother, Nancy O’Neill, Antnony Hoiles and Sebastian Shaw make -jp a perfectly balanced cast. The huge festival scene, providing music, dancing, singing and humour, is one of the best scenes yet shown in a musical picture. The closing scene, showing how Brewster barely manages to meet the conditions of his legacy, is also excellently doiyi.
