ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. RESULTS OF FIRST DAY’S PLAY. Though the weather was gloriously fine a stiff southerly wind made playing conditions rather difficult at the New Plymouth Golf Club’s. Ngamotu links yesterday at the opening of the North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Golf Association’s fourth annual tournament. This fixture, which has grown from a small beginning in 1932, has attained large proportions: and there were over 80 competitors at Ngamotu yesterday. All the players had arrived without any thoughts of hard times, the impending prohibition poll and the beer duty, and even if they had not; all these were soon forgotten in the struggle round the testing course in the high wind. Many were the struggles which took place in the bunkers, creeks and tree plantations. These were the scenes of many trials and tribulations which were afterwards discussed at length and' with much feeling at the 19th hole and beyond. An event such as this requires a tremendous amount of organisation, and it is doubtful whether there was a busier man in the Dominion yesterday than the secretary. Mr. G. B. Menzies. Napier, and certainly no man was called upon to answer so many questions at once. Mr. Menzies, assisted by the president of the association, Mr. J. D. Power, New Plymouth, came through hjs ordeal with flying colours, though he did express the opinion that he would have had an easier task playing round the course with a visit to every bunker.

The outstanding feature of the day’s play was the defeat of. the Retailers’ title-holder, J. N. Anderson, Hawera, inthe first round by E. Manley, Wanganui. Anderson was not in his-best form and Manley produced golf of a calibre that proved too much for the reigning champion. The fixture will conclude to-day, when all the finals and semi-finals will be played. Following are the qualifiers and. the results of the first round of the match play for the various events:-— •RETAILERS. - White Horse Championship and President’s Trophy. L. A.'
