Mrs. J. D. Law, who has been spending the week-end at New Plymouth, left by express last night for Auckland, where she will live in future. Mrs. L. Curtis returned during the week-end from a visit to Rotorua. Mrs, B. Cumberworth arrived on Friday from Hamilton to spend a few days with her mother, Mrs. D. Harris .Bros.’ orchestra supplied the music. • . - “ .: ' WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Inglewood: The seventh birthday of the Inglewood Women’s Institute was celebrated on Thursday in the town hall, when there Were about 150 members -■ and Visitors present, including representatives from neighbouring institutes and local organisations.-. The visitors were welcomed by the president, Mrs. Kaye, after which an entertaining programme was presented as follows: Dance, minuet in costume, Te Roti, institute; vocal items, Mrs. McKeen and Miss M. Leech;. elocutionary items, Mrs. Braybrooke; a one-act play, “Widows,” Mesdames B. R. "Jones, Bethel and Cramer. The long tea tables were artistically decorated in shades of lavender (the institute’s colours) and gold. A feature of the afternoon was the magnificent birthday cake, made, and iced by Mesdames Codd and Lindsay, on the top tier of which was daintily poised a crinoline “lavender lady,” chafmingly frocked in organdie, the-work of Mrs. Porter. The seven candies on the cake were lit by Mrs. Burgess, first president, and extinguished by Mrs. Braybrooke, first secretary, after which the cake was cut by Mrs. Kaye, the president. Congratulatory speeches Were made by: Mrs. Gibbs, Mayoress; Mrs. Wanklyn, Plunket Society; Mrs. Mackinder, W.C.T.U.; Mrs. Adriams and Miss Trimble, former presidents; Mrs. McAsey, Taranaki federation; representatives of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union and of th.- following institutes, Frankley, Hurford, Tariki, Te Roti, Kaimata, 'Upper Mangorei and Inglewood junior institute. Mrs. Allen (England), the founder of the Inglewood institute, is to be sent a letter and a piece of birthday cake. A competition for a dinner in aid of the /‘special effort” fund was won by Mrs. ’Stimpson.
