MURDER OF REVENGE
DEATH OF MR. GARETH JONES. MISTAKE MADE OVER RANSOM. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 7.30 p.m. Peking, Aug. 17. The British Embassy is making strong representations to the Nanking Government regarding the murder of Gareth Jones, formerly Mr. Lloyd George’s secretary, which is believed to be due .to a misunderstanding between the Chinese magistrates negotiating the ransom. The magistrate at Paochang did not inform his colleague in an adjoining district that he was offering a ransom. The colleague, when the bandits entered his district, sent troops against thern, which, with the non-arrival of the ransom, caused the bandits to suspect the negotiators’ sincerity. Accordingly they murdered Mr. Jones in revenge.
