GORGE BLOCKED
HEAVY RAIN IN MANAWATU. CITY WATER SUPPLY THREATENED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Aug. 17. A further heavy rainfall overnight on the saturated countryside caused many slips in the hill country. The Manawatu Gorge is still blocked and strenuous efforts are being made to keep the alternative route via the Pahiatua track open, though the rainfall has created bad conditions. A washout on Fitzherbert Hill Road has endangered one of the pipes carrying the city’s water supply from the reservoir. Rivers and streams are rising and farm lands are sodden with water, causing expectations of mortality among newly-born lambs. Sports fixtures have been cancelled and steady rain continues. —
