“SNAILPLANE” TRIP

PAIR’S ARRIVAL AT WAITARA. DUE NEW PLYMOUTH AT NOON. After 14 days on the road, and ahead of schedule by two or three miles, the “Snailaplane” travellers, Messrs. L. G. Lukey and J. G. Schofield, arrived at Waitara at 3.30 yesterday afternoon and were met by a' large crowd of cyclists and motorists. They will leave Waitara at 8.30 this morning and are due at New Plymouth between 11.45 and 12 o’clock. A start will be made for Inglewood to-morrow morning. On Saturday, the travellers made a 20-mile trek from Mokau to Urenui and yesterday tramped from Urenui to Waitara between 10.30 and 3.30. They are as fit as fiddles and declare themselves pleased to be back in civilisation after the rather lonely experience of travelling through the King Country and the i upper portion of North Taranaki. Of the 14 days spent on the road since Auckland was left on August 5, eight have been wet and the last six days have either been continuously wet or showery. On the metalled roads of the King Country and«especially on the section between Mahoenui and Pio Pio, Mr. Lukey experienced great difficulty in getting a foothold and that part of the trip was a severe trial. Mount Messenger was found to be far less exacting than anticipated, chiefly because of the . tar-sealing giving an easy surface for climbing- On the sealed roads of Taranaki the travellers anticipate no trouble whatsoever and they are looking forward to fast times. To-night they will be the guests of Mr. Roy Deare.
