WELL BRED MARE

TUIRAU IMPROVING Tuirau, who was third in the Winter Cup and second in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton, is a five-year-old mare by Silverado, the sire of Silver Scorn from the useful Lucullus mare Tuahine, who comes from the same family as Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap. As she had not raced since Easter before her start at the Christchurch Hunt meeting her recent racing should have been beneficial to her. Though (she is not engaged at Riccarton to-day she is worth remembering the next time she starts. In the Winter Cup Tuirau carried strange colours. When W. J. Broughton broke a leg in a fall from Haste Away, he was taken to the hospital, wearing the jacket of Messrs. W. O. and D. O. Rutherford. In the circumstances, the stewards did not call for a fine when Tuirau paraded with her substitute jockey (N. R. McKenzie) carrying Mr. R. J. Murphy’s purple jacket, surmounted by a gold cap.
