HAWERA SINGER RETURNS
PART IN WELLINGTON PLAY. Glowing accounts of the kindness and hospitality accorded her by members of the Wellington Amateur Operatic Society were given by Miss Doris Gilmore, Hawera, who returned on Wednesday after a three weeks’ visit to Wellington, where she was understudy to Miss Olga Hancock for the part of O in the society’s recent production, “The G During her stay at Wellington, said Miss Gilmore, she was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. Haley at their home at Miramar. She was greatly assisted in her work by them, as both were actively connected with the production. Mr. Haley took the role of Cunninghaip, whilst Mrs. Haley was the official accompanist to the society. Speaking of the play itself, Miss Gilmore expressed herself as being charmed with the costuming, lighting effects and scenery, which were on a most lavish scale and gave the performers every incentive to give of their best. Miss Hancock created a very favourable impression her handling of the leading female role, ’said Miss Gilmore, her singing particularly being well received by the full houses which greeted every performance. Among the many fine singers who took leading parts Miss Gilmore mentioned Mr. Trevdr ThomSS and Mr. A. Barr, light baritone and tenor respectively, as being well received by the Audience, the singing of the latter, in particular, being the subject of much favourable comment. Following the curtain on the final night the company, which was one happy family throughout, was entertained by the committee, whilst Miss Hancock and Miss Gilmore were also guests at a reception given by Mrs. Knox-Gilmer, a well known Wellington hostess.
