CONTESTS AT NEW PLYMOUTH. WAITARA WINS DEARE SHIELD. At the primary school basketball tournament for . the Deare Shield and Rose Bowl at New Plymouth on Saturday there was a large number of entries in both A and B. grades. Waitara won the A grade and Opunake Convent the B grade. , • ' ■' Owing to. the. inclemency of the weather the tournament was held in the Coronation Hall, but in spite of somewhat cramped conditions, the standard of the games in both grades was ver/ high and most of them Were evenly contested. A number were drawn necessitating a play on. Excitement ran high, especially in the finals. Although some of the teams travelled long distances, there was only one default.
