Essex gained a commanding lead over the South Africans when it made 302 in the first innings in reply to the tourists’ 250, and then dismissed South Africa for 223. The county lost one for 24 in the second innings and has 148 to make to win, with nine wickets in hand. The Essex innings was remarkable for the distribution of the runs among the batsmen, only two scoring below doubla figures. The opening batsman Cutmore was top scorer with 72. The Essex tailenders enabled the county to lead on the first innings. Stephenson again produced a temporary collapse, taking three for three in four overs.
