ALL MARKETS QUIET

LITTLE CHRISTCHURCH BUSINESS. PRICES OF POTATOES UNCHANGED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The week, like all Grand National weeks, has been an exceptionally quiet one in grain and produce markets and little business has passed. Potatoes, which continue to absorb most interest, have remained very much as they were at the end of last week and prices have altered hardly at all. The Wingatui got away for the north with a total of 8048 sacks, 2548 from Timaru and 5500 from Lyttelton. The shipment was not expected to be nearly as heavy from here. As it was, though shipments have been substantial for a month, there appears to be no serious weakening of the Auckland market, buyers there preferring to shift potatoes as they come rather than buy forward. A late season in the north has undoubtedly helped. Locally there has been very little activity, partly because of the holidays and partly also because the market keeps exceedingly quiet. Practically no whites are being offered and very few Dakotas in which the main interest of the trade seem to centre.

The rest of the market, though still quiet, have shown slight signs of reviving activity. Odd lines of oats are moving out at unchanged prices. Odd small parcels of seeds are being sold to the retail trade, but there has as yet been little disposition on the part of buyers to come into the market in any strength* The late season in the north is making itself felt. It is usual at this time of the year to find keen interest in seeds but so far the interest has not materialised.
