FEDERAL HINT
STRIKE INTERVENTION WILL EXERCISE POWERS QUICK SOLUTION ASKED APPEAL FROM ADELAIDE INDUSTRY IN JEOPARDY By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.40 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 16. The latest seven vessels to become involved in the shipping strike are. the Carlisle, Momba, Macedon, Montoro,. Malaita and Ngakuta The Ngakuta is to arrive at Sydney to-night and was to sail for New Zealand to-morrow, but the crew has already given notice Officials of the Seamen’s Union will meet at Sydney on Tuesday to consider the dispute. There is also to be a mass meeting of Sydney seamen on Monday. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, has received a telegram from Sir George Ritchie, Acting-Premier of South Australia, asking the Federal Government to intervene in the strike because of the likelihood of the motor body building industry of South Australia becoming paralysed if the strike is continued over the week-end.
Mr. Lyons after this announced that the Government would, not hesitate to exercise its powers to ensure the maintenance of sea transport if a settlement was not reached shortly.
Special importance is attached to the hold-up of the inter-State steamer Craigend, because the company is outside the Australian Steamship Owners’ Federation, upon whose ships the ban has been applied. This development is regarded as evidence in maritime circles that the strike committee is prepared to involve all sliips indiscriminately.
The only passenger vessels in commission after Monday next, apart from the Tasmanian steamers, will be the interstate liners Canberra and Westralia. The Steamship Owners’ Association today issued a statement that providing the principle of free selection of crews is not disputed and the ships are maimed forthwith the shipowners have no desire to discriminate against men dismissed on account of the present dispute.
