FUND FOR EDUCATION

ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY RESPONSIBILITY OF PUBLIC. GOOD SUM ALREADY COLLECTED. FEW BOYS NOW UNEMPLOYED <: As the result of a decision made by the New Plymouth Boys’ Unemployment Committee at a meeting last May to raise funds to help towards the education of boys in poor circumstances, Mr. A. F. Sandford who, with Mr. C. Carter, was delegated to do the' collecting, has on hand between £l4 and £l5 given by donors who for the most part wish to remain anonymous. Mr. Sandford wisheS to establish a fund of about £3O. It seemed a pity, said Mr. Sandford m an interview with the Daily News yesterday, that boys and often exceptionally bright ones, should owing to the unhappy circumstances of their families be compelled to leave school on reachmgtne sixth standard. A subsidy had been granted for helping boys to start out on their careers, but this was not available for assisting a boy with his education. The object of this fund was to heln boys whose parents found themselves unable to afford the necessary books and clothing for proper sec. ondarv education, and it was proposed to use the funds to buy, say, a cap ana stockings or a few books until such a time as suitable employment was found. “I think it is an important duty ror us as citizens to keep up the spinte of these bdys,” continued Mr. Sandford. “Unemployed boys need looking after more than unemployed men, as these future citizens soon become dispirited, n uncared for-and that is bad busmess. Mr W. H. Moyes, headmaster of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, when interviewed, spoke along similar Imes, and added that it was'the committees policy to inquire each year from primary school headmasters for particulars or bbys leaving school and with no prospect of employment Happily they were gradually able to place the boys, with toe result that at the present time few were without employment of some kmd. It was good for the boys to realise that someone was taking an interest m their welfare, and that they were beginning to recognise the help given by the Boys Unemployment Committee, asswasb o ™ out by the applications made to Mr. Moyes and Mr. W. H. Insiffi, of the Education Board and a prominent member of the committee.
