TO DRESS OR NOT TO DRESS
MARIE GLORY’S ENGLISH ERROR. A good story is told by Marie Glory, the French actress. It concerts her first visit to England, when her command of English was not quite so good as it is now. Marie went to a certain London restaurant to meet a friend who was the leader of the orchestra. Unfortunately the afternoon session had just finished and Marie realised she would have to come back in the evening. She approached four pages intending to ask them whether she should return in ordinary clothes or in full evening dress. Fixing them with her friendly eyes she asked, “Must I come this evening undressed or in my night-dress.” One of the pages grinned, one giggled, one doubled up and then solemnly replied, “As you wish, madame.”
