WORLD SENSATION
GREAT MUSICAL OPERETTA. “NAUGHTY MARIETTA” SUCCESS. Something in the nature of a sensation in England and the United States in recent ■ months, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer s musical operetta “Naughty Marietta is now captivating Sydney and Melbourne. Many operettas have come and gone since the advent of music to the screen, but few, if any, have aroused such a furore. Now in its seventh week at Sydney, the film was booked for New Plymouth a fortnight ago, but its imm.ense popularity with city audiences, caused a delay. Already almost 55,000 Aucklanders have seen the picture since the commencer ment of its run, many of them two, three and four times, and it is significant that in the third week of the picture the crowds have been bigger than ever. So pronounced has been its success all over the world that Nelson Eddy has been elevated to stardom overnight and is now scheduled to appear with Grace Moore in the screen version of “Rose Marie,” and in another picture, “Maytime,” with Jeanette MacDonald. This new departure in operettas combines adventure with music, but perhaps the greatest attraction of all is Nelson Eddy’s marvellous voice and his . magnetic personality. The four principal songs, “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp,” “’Neath a Southern Moon,” “I’m Falling In Love With Someone,” and the duet “Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life” are magnificent.
Molly Lamont and John Wood, an Australian, will make their first appearance for RKO Radio Wctures in “Jalna” from the novel by Mazo de la Roche. >
