KNITTING CORNER

A COSY JUMPER. This looks very effective when made, for it is knitted in a fancy rib stitch. It will fit a girl about 14 years of age. Materials: Eight oz. of 2 ply wool, a pair of knitting needles, size 10. Back: Cast on 90 sts. and knit into the backs of the sts. in the first row, then continue in pattern as fololws:— Ist row: * K. 1, p. 1, k. 2, p. 1; repeat from *to end of row. 2nd row: *K. 1, p. 2, k. 1, p. 1; repeat from * to end of row. 3rd row: * K. 1, p. 1, insert needle in front of next st. but one, knit this and slip it over the st. passed by, and so off the needle, k. the st. passed over, p. 1. Repeat from * to end of row. 4th row: * K. 1, p. 2, k. 1, p. 1; repeat from * to end of row.

Front: Cast on 95 sts. and work exactly as for back until work measures 3J inches from start, then increase 1 st. each end of the next row and every sixth row after until there are 115 sts. on needle. Continue without further shaping till work measures 13 inches from start, then shape the armholes thus: Cast off }0 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows, then knit 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row till 65 sts. remain. Now shape the neck as follows:—

Next row: i>nit 25 in pattern, cast off 15 pattern to end. Continue on these last 25 sts. for the time being, as follows: Still continue to decrease 1 st. at the armhole edge of every alternate row as before, but also decrease 1 st. at the neck edge Of every alternate row till all sts. are worked off. Join wool on at neck edge of other side and work to match. Sleeves (both alike): Cast on 50 sts. and knit in pattern for 3 inches. Then continue in pattern, but increase 1 st. at each end of the next row and every 6th row after, till there are 90 sts. on needle, and sleeve measures required length down underarm- Then shape the top thus: Cast off 10 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows, then knit 2 tog. at each end of every alternate row till 30 sts. remain, then knit ? tog. each end of every row till all sts. are worked off. Collar: Cast on 20 sts. and work in pat, tern till collar measures 14 inches from start. Cast off. Belt: Same as collar, but 26 .inches long. To make up: Press work. Join the shaped sides of top and sleeves to the’ front and back of jumper,, then join the sides and sleeve seams. Sew the collar to the neck edge to reach to the cast off section in centre front. Sew on gome big decorative buckle for the neck and waist.
