Many women would like to know how to prepare simple cosmetics, and will probably Welcome one or two tested recipes. For Sunburn: Mix fine Fuller’s earth to a paste with rose water and extract of witch hazel—one part witch* hazel to three parts rose water. Apply liberally to the skin, leave for an hour, and wash off with milk and water. To Soften and Whiten the Skin: This paste must be made fresh as required. Mix almond meal with new milk, spread on the face, leave for twenty minutes, and remove with rose water. Old Cure for Freckles: Buttermilk is best, but if this is not easily obtainable sour milk may be used instead. If the freckles are bad gently rub a slice of lemon over the skin, let the moisture remain for five minutes, sponge off with rose water, then dab with cotton wool soaked, in milk. A Good Astringent Lotion: Mix a pinch of powdered benzoin with a gill of refined spirits of wine and the same amount of toilet vinegar. A Simple and Harmless Vegetable Colouring may be made from beetroot. Wash a small red beet, slice it into a clean double saucepan, just cover with water, and cook until soft. Strain the juice through fine muslin, add a little rectified spirits of wine, and store in a stoppered bottle.
