ARBOR DAY

INGLEWOOD CELEBRATION. 252 TREES PLANTED AT SCHOOL. On Thursday afternoon Arbor Day was celebrated at the Inglewood school when 252 trees were planted. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. . M. Sutherland, said that undoubtedly the inclement weather had prevented many from attending, but it was very gratifying to see such great support .from the public for the whole of the 252 trees had been paid for by voluntary subscription. The Mayor, Mr. J. Gibbs, who planted the first tree, a Lawsoniana, in the central plot mentioned that some of the children’s fathers and grandfathers had come to Inglewood when it was standing bush and by hard work had cleared the land but now reafforestation was found to be necessary. He said that no school in New Zealand would have a finer nursery than Inglewood and they belonged to the children and it was up to them to look after the trees for only recently 36 young trees in a borough reserve had been wilfully destroyed. Mr. V. C. Davies said that Inglewood had' something to be proud of in its school grounds for the trees being- planted represented 165 varieties of native trees which had come from all parts of New Zealand and some of which were very rare. Mr. Davies emphasised that the trees were living things and asked the children to look after them. The next two trees were planted in memory of two former pupils, the late Noel Armstrong and the late George John List. Two senior pupils, Betty Sutton and Leslie Kennedy, planted a tree each, followed by Mrs. Winifred (past women teachers), Mr. I. P. Grant (past men teachers), Miss Tarry (present women teachers) arid Mr. Brown (present men teachers). The planting of the rest of the trees was then proceeded with, the trees being planted by both children and adults as their names were called. A basketball and football competition

was held at Inglewood between Inglewood and Eltham. In the football Inglewood defeated Eltham by 56 poirits to nil. In the basketball the Inglewood A team was successful by 22 points to 11. The B team won by 5 points to 3.
