COURT FAVOURITES
WIMBLEDON FAITHFUL. No one can accuse Wimbledon of being fickle where its favourites are concerned. The reception accorded to the Senorita de Alvarez and to Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody when they returned to the courts after long absence was really remarkable in its warmth and spontaneity. Mrs. Wills-Moody was always a rather aloof little figure, but the tall, graceful Spanish player was one whom all the tennis “fans” took to their hearts. She played to the gallery as much, and almost as successfully, as Borotra himself. How the crowd roared with laughter when she fell in her first match, recovered herself, and dashed to retrieve the ball—only to find that she had 'lt her racquet lying on the ground! As for Borotra himself, he has never, in the hour of. his greatest victories, received such an ovation as when he left the centre court after suffering defeat at the hands of Men?el.
