SKATING CARNIVAL

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS CARNIVAL. A vice-versa skating carnival was held in St Joseph’s hall, Hawera, on Wednesday night a wide variety of costumes being worn. The distribution of confetti, squeakers and paper .hats lent a carnival air to the proceedings. Competitions resulted as follow: Women’s viceversa costume, Miss Kenning 1; men’s, M. Stockwell 1; women’s balloon race, Miss N. Wasley 1; men’s hoop race, G. Fraser 1; most graceful couple, R. Tuelch and Miss N. Wasley; women’s hoop race, Miss Wasley 1; men’s wheelbarrow derby, G. Fraser and W. Kelly 1; men’s musical boxes, C. Perrett It men’s race, 14 laps, R. Tuelch and D. Haggie dead heat 1; men’s sledge race, Wilkinson and team 1; Monte Carlo, K. Riley and Miss O’Keefe 1; three-legged race» S. Riley and Miss R. Childs 1; boxing on skates, K. Fitzwater beat W. Kelly on points in a fourround contest. During the evening an exhibition of fancy skating was given by Professor Roushworth. GRAND THEATRE, HAWERA. “WAKE UP AND DREAM.” “Wake Up and Dream,” starring Russ Columbo and Roger Pryor, showing at the Grand Theatre, Hawera, tells of the adventures of a comedy vaudeville team that is usually only one jump ahead of the police. Finally the players arrive at Hollywood, where they become acquainted with the amorous Miss Doucet. Henry Armetta, as an Italian opera singer, furnish© hilarious comedy, while Russ Columbo sings several song numbers in the manner that makes him one of the foremost radio crooners. “THE LITTLE MINISTER.” KATHARINE HEPBURN’S BEST. Events of little importance fade soon and become indistinct in our memories, but above the vague and ordinary impressions of life there are certain things which stand out and remain forever fresh, in our memories. To this list must . be added “The Little Minister,” which opened its season at the Hawera Opera House yesterday. It is a marvellous presentation and Katharine Hepburn, as Babbie, gives her greatest contribution toward her record of successes. The tale is laid in the quaint and picturesque Scottish hamlet of Thrums, immortalised by Sir James M. Barrie, and “The Little Minister” tells one of the most i absorbing love stories ever filmed. Miss Hepburn has never had a finer role than Babbie, nor taken part in a lovelier ; screen romance than with Gavin, the shy little dominie. The picture is full of action, colour and humour. Although the name of Hepburn is in itself sufficient to fill any theatre there are several added attractions. The Pipe Band is to play outside the theatre between 7.30 and 8 o’clock, and Miss Doreen Nairn,, who is one of New Zealand’s best Scottish dancers, will make an appearance on the stage.
