DAIRYING DEVELOPMENT

STORY OF GRADING STORE TREND OF QUALITY TRACED. THE RAPID GROWTH OF EXPORTS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS’ GRADING. Interesting figures showing the development of the dairy industry in Taranaki were given by Mr. F. Thomson to the dairy factory managers at his farewell at New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. Thomson has graded the butter for export at the Taranaki Producers’ Freezing Works at Moturoa for .25 years and the' figures cover, that, period; The butte grading average percentage stood at 92.75 in 1917 and four years later had risen to 93.45, he said. The average slumped to 92.38 in 1921 but since thexx had improved slowly but surely until this year it stood at 93.99. Cheese likewise improved from 89.93 in 1917 to 92.26 in 1927, but the standardisation which came in 1929 saw the grade fall again, and it has really only come back to the 1927 level during the past two years. Following are the grading figures since 1917 for butter and cheese respectively;—

The quantities are also illuminating. In 1911 200,009 boxes of butter passed through the works and only 30,000. crates of cheese. In 1920 the butter quantity had dropped to 80,00'0, while cheese had risen to 155,000. Butter then started to come back to its own and in 1935 its total had reached 412,266 boxes; compared with 248,000 crates of cheese. The increase over the 25 years period was 232,266 boxes of butter and 199,000 crates of cheese. Following are the figures:—
