AUSTRALIANS WIN

DEFEAT OF ENGLISH TEAM. CONTEST AT EASTBOURNE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. London, July 20. Australia defeated England by three matches to one, with one unfinished, in a contest at Eastbourne under Davis Cup rules. On Thursday Crawford beat Perry and Austin beat. McGrath, Yesterday Quist and Turnbull defeated Hughes and Tuckey (England) 3—6, 6—3, B—6, 6 —4. Today’s results were: Crawford defeated Austin 6—2, 6—4, 3-6, 6—3. Perry versus McGrath, 2—6, 6— 2, 3—l when the match was abandoned on account of rain. „ Full of confidence after defeating Perry, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully and served well. He volleyed more often than usual. He altogether overshadowed the Englishman’s stylish but less virile game. Perry and McGrath fought at a great pace. McGrath in the first set hammered backhand drives straight down the line with remarkable accuracy, but Perry intensifying his boisterous belligerence overwhelmingly won the second set. Turnbull was the best of the four doubles players yesterday. He served and smashed with savage accuracy. The Australians generally were superior in volleying ana smashing. Tuckey, England’s new Davis Cup recruit, is playing much better with experience. He is serving powerfully and his ground strokes have improved. Mr. Wallis Myers, commenting in the Daily Telegraph on Crawford’s defeat of Perry, writes: “The Eastbourne form does not mean that Perry will play the same at Wimbledon, where previously he has produced centre court regenerations. The - best Perry emerges on the right day. Nevertheless Crawford staged a game which even the best Perry would have difficulty in subduing. It was the Crawford of our dreams.”

Harry Hopman, writing for the SunHerald service on tennis subjects,' says: “The Australians’ tour has been a financial success. The profits, without the Eastbourne match, where most of the seats were sold, should approach £2OOO. The New Zealand tie yielded £lOO, the French £2500 and the German £900.” VICTORY FOR MALFROY. " HIS DEFEAT OF NISHIMURA. Rec. 7 p.m. London, July 20. Malfroy (New Zealand) defeated Nishimura (Japan) at the Frinton tennis tournament 6—2, B—6.
