At beaches in the New York metropolitan area the temperature dropped from 90deg. Fahrenheit to 67deg. within a few minutes and torrential rain sent several hundred thousand bathers scurrying for shelter. There was considerable traffic disorder. The four persons killed were seeking shelter under a sheet iron roof. One had just commented on the foolishness of people staying on the beach during the storm when a bolt of lightning tore through the structure, horribly burning and mutilating the bodies.
