WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Gpaku; The branch celebrated its birthday on July .10 with a social and dance :ln the Opaku hall which was decorated in the institute’s colours of red and white. A display of articles made by members was arranged. The musical programme included a community sing and soprano solos by Mesdames I. Jones, T. J. Scott and W. G. Ingley. A tap dance was given by Miss Hughes. Mr. and Mrs. A. Hurley won the Monte Carlo waltz competitions, Miss Handley winning the novelty dance and Mrs. Hughes, with Mr. Freere, won the musical competition. Mrs. Chatterton senr. lit the two candles on the birthday cake which were extinguished by Miss Hilliar, Mrs. Davidson cutting the cake. Mrs. Hughes, vice-president, presented the president with a shrub from members who hoped that it would grow and remind her of pleasant times spent together. Mrs. Davidson, in expressing surprise and gratification, said she had found much pleasure in the accomplishment of her duties. The first and second prizes for' competitions held during the year were awarded Miss Hilliar and Mrs. Hughes. Mrs. Wilson was the donor of the first prize. Appreciation of the hall committee’s co-operation and the assistance given by Patea members was expressed.

Wbareroa: Mrs. Larcom presided at the monthly meeting over an attendance oi 23. The Rev. Mr. Ings spoke on India, its peoples and customs. In a competition for a buttonhole worked in five minutes the successful competitors were Mesdames Laing 1, Haigh 2, Holloway 3. The judge was Mrs. Pennington. Ten shillings was donated to the King’s jubilee cancer fund. Members were asked to take charge of the hospital visiting fot July. A small donation was made to the endowment foundation fund. A bring and buy stall was jn charge of Mrs. and Miss Thomlinson. The hostesses were Mesdames S. and W. Pope and Mrs. Smith.

Turuturu: There was a good attendance at the last meeting, visitors being present from Te Roti, Normanby, Palmerston North and Wellington. Mrs. Fowler demonstrated the making of seagrass stools. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Competitions were won as follows: Thrift article for bathroom,' Miss L. Exley 1, Miss Whittington 2, Mrs. Eden 3; picture titles, Mrs. McEwen; potato competition, Mrs. Martin Smith. A gardening circle was formed. The hostesses were Mrs. Batten and Misses I. and L. Exley.
