33 YEARS AT MANAIA

VETERAN BUSINESSMAN MR. AND MRS. MELDON HONOURED. WORK IN INTERESTS OF TOWN. Members of the Manaia Businessmen's Association and their wives assembled in the town hall on Thursday evening to express appreciation of the fine work Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Meldon had done during their 33 years in business at Manaia. Mr. Meldon has recently retired from business and the businessmen’s association, of which Mr. Meldon is a member, took the opportunity of expressing gratitude for their pioneer work for the welfare of the town. Mr. W. Armitage presided. A concert programme arranged by Mi - . C. W. Abbott was as follows:—Orchestral selection, Silby family; song, Mr. B. Badland; violin solo, Master E. Harrison; song, Mrs. R. Miller; pianoforte duet, Mrs. C. W. Abbott and Mr. K. Davis; song, Mr. J. H. G. Cosgrove; song, Mrs. C. W. Abbott; orchestral selection, Silby family. The accompaniments were played by Messrs. G. Innes and C. W. Abbott. A letter from Mr. A. G. Bennett stated that he was unable to attend but joined in expressing appreciation of Mr. Meldon’s work. Mr. Armitage, chairman of the association, said Mr. Meldon had been a member of the town board, had held the position of chairman and had also taken an active part in all social events for the welfare of the town. Mr. L. C. Harrison, chairman of the town board, stated that during his few years at Manaia he had found that Mr. and Mrs. Meldon were very fine people. Mr. Meldon’s 33 years’ service to the public had been appreciated by all citizens. Mr. A. H. Yarrow stated Mr. Meldon had not only .taken an active part in the affairs of the town but had also been a member of the hospital board and had played an important part during the war on the Patriotic Society. Mr. Meldon was a Justice of the peace. The Rev. R. Miller said he had not been a resident at Manaia very long, but long enough to appreciate the fine work of Mr. Meldon in the building up , of Manaia, not only in his business capacity, but also in the affairs of the town. Mr. Miller added that he was pleased to see young businessmen taking an active part in the businessmen’s association affairs and hoped they would follow the example set by Mr. Meldon. Mr. A. J. Christie said Mr. Meldon had done fine work during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Messrs. P. Instone and J. A. G. Cosgrove spoke in similar strain. Mr. R. L. Bennett paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Meldon’s splendid work on the patriotic committee. Mr. S. Blair said he had been employed by Mr. Meldon for many years and said it was a pleasure to work under Him. Mr. Meldon had been most helpful to many families in need which had not been known to the public. Messrs. C. Jeromson, A. J. Clare, G. R. Watts and E. Massey and Dr. C. R. Davies endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. All speakers referred to the good qualities of Mrs. Meldon and wished both of them happiness in their retirement. • Mr. C. Hunger, one of the oldest businessmen of the town, in making a presentation of a travelling rug to Mrs. Meldon and an electric heater to Mr. Meldon, said he knew Mr. Meldon before he commenced business at Manaia. As a business man Mr. Meldon had worked earnestly with his fellows in the interests of the town. Mr. Meldon expressed appreciation of l the honour done himself and his wife. He surveyed the growth of Manaia. Mr.. W. Armitage thanked the artists and Mr. J. Rodie for organising the social. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Misses Ings, Huggins, Stock, Patterson and Mr. Percy have been training the children, and there will be in addition several interesting ‘‘famfly group” items. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertises particulars of mart sales at Hawera of fruit, hedge and shelter plants, cabbage and cauliflower plants, etc., at 11 a.m. to-day and poultry, including 12 Black Orpington pullets and pedigree White Leghorn cockerel, roofing iron, furniture and sundries at 1.30 pm.

The Hawera Pipe Band will hold a long night dance in the winter show buildings on Wednesday. There will be old and modern dances. A euchre and dance party in aid of the basketball club will be held in the Matapix hall on Tuesday July 23. The annual meeting of the South Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ Association will be held in the borough chambers, Hawera, to-day at 11 a.m. All interested are invited to attend. The annual spring flower show of St. Mary’s, Hawera, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, September 18 and 19.
