ALL SOUTHERN VICTORIA. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Rec. 7.40 p.m.. Melbourne, July 19. The whole of the southern part of the State is being swept by a 45 miles an hour gale,- which is considerably hampering shipping and is doing extensive damage to property, electric light and telegraph lines. Attempts to berth the Monterey today proved futile and the liner was finally compelled to anchor off Port Melbourne. Smaller ships were unable to enter the Yarra River. • Reports from the, ‘country state that there have been heavy falls of snow, a regular blizzard prevailing in the southern Australian Alps. The inter-State liner Westralia, which arrived from Perth, was forced to anchor in the bay and send her passengers ashore in tugs. Damage was« done on the foreshore. Piers were damaged and small craft were blown ashore. Fences were levelled in the suburbs.
