Cowling brought some specimens from the district into the Daily News Office. yesterday. Although not quite ready for eating they were fully grown and wanted only two . or. three more days until maturity. Mr. Cowling attributes their ripening to the mild winter and the exceptionally early spring. He has'never before known kie kies to ripen before October. “In the early days of settlement,” fee said; “the kie kie was hunted for its food, bdth by pakeha and Maori. , When ripe it has a delicious pineapple. flavour although sweeter. In the most difficult days of colonisation from 1885 to 1895, when food was scarce, I have made many a meal from the kie kie alone.” ' ,
