Heads First into SPRING

THE FORWARD movement in brims will be an-

ich have been at work to provide us with our new season’s millinery, and this spring finds us with a bewildering array of styles from which to choose. From present indications the BRETON SAILOR promises greatest popularity. An off-the-face movement has always been popular with women, especially with the young ones, and there is no doubt that the circular sweep of rim does make a most becoming frame to a pretty face. The Bretons, it seems, can be worn in many ways, but most becoming and newest of all will be the dead-straight line, as shown by Miss Jocelyn Howarth in the uppermost picture of this group. Although many of the sailors will be of soft fine straw, quite a number will favor the wide, shiny plaited straws, which are a highlight of the new season’s mode. Also for sports wear, Bretons will be of stitched straws and quite noticeable will be the amount of colored stitching used to achieve gay effects. CARTWHEELS will be a pleasing innovation, and, although the crowns f most hats will be decidedly shallower than they were last year, the cartwheel type seems to have a little more security than did the large brimmed hats of last spring. Regarding the cartwheels, it is amazing the number which will show coarse straw brims and velvet or felt crowns. As the season grows, felt will no doubt be replaced by floral crowns. The cartwheel will mostly sit to the side of the head with under-brim ribbon or floral trimming showing on the raised side. Sometimes, however, the cartwheel will show the one-eye Vogue, which means a pretty one-sided droop. The mushroom brim will be seen n those cartwheels which are designed to sit more or less straight upon the/head. In the others the brims will be fairly straight or only slightly undulating.

other mode that will assail us, ana already quite a large number of the models which are opening up from Paris and America show what is being called the “verandah” brim. In these models the attenuated back brim is turned either up or down, giving a much foreshortened appearance to the back of the hat. Here, quite often, will be bunched bouquets of flowers or ribbon clusters. Some emphasis, too, must be placed on the flower-decked visor brim, which will be a very pretty spring style if carried out with taste. THE FLOWER POT or postman version of the toque is one which we may expect to see repeated often. This has brim flattened down over the hair at the back: and the line continues straight up at the back to form a fairly high back crown. From a point to be fixed there is a definite downward grade to a much reduced crown height in front. The “pill-box” is another new species of toque. Although smooth and coarse straws seem to be making a big stir among milliners, there is no doubt that the exotic straws, especially in black, navy, white and natural shades, will boom, and as for the toyo panama, well that will still continue to be a first favorite. i

News comes out from Ascot of an enormous straw bonnet, and it will be interesting to see if any of the Sydney stores will feature this. The felt bonnet was a most becoming Winter style, although all but a very few were shy of it. TRIMMINGS will be important, and we may look forward to seeing a very great use made of flowers, either in singles or loosely falling posies or in massed all-over effects. Ribbons, too, will be important, and satin and Petersham will be used on the more formal types. It is interesting to notice the consideration which is being given to special events like flying, motoring,' etc. One style consists of shantung or linen aviator’s cap with large detachable straw brim, to be worn without the brim when motoring, and with brim for formal occasions. VEILS are, of bourse, definitely booming, but many of them will find a new resting place ... at the back of the toques instead of over the eyes. And, there will be much bunching of the 1 veil and arrangement with floral motifs. In addition to the back streamline there will be a front and side veil streamline which will be quite interesting. One store promises chin straps of tulle, too. And as an exaggeration of the veil, there will be masses of cut tulle arranged from crowns.
