HAWERA TRACK WORK

INGENUITY PREPARES PROGRAMME . FOR NOTIUM

(By

“Limited.”)

Ingenuity looks an improved mare as a result of her spell and will soon resume track work. The High Art mare is doing preparatory work on the roads. In• ner races this season Ingenuity gave definite indications of staying ability, as invariably badly placed in the early stages her finishing runs were remarkable and suggest her running out a mile and aquarter or even a longer journey with credit. Her track work is rarely impressive but in her races she displays both gameness and. stamina. The only Hawera hack to be directly affected by the new rule passed at the tecent New Zealand Racing Conference altering the definition of hack to horses that have won £406 in first moneys is C. Jackson’s Diagano, who has won £445 in first moneys and thus becomes ineligible to race again in hack class. Aga Khan is still doing toad exercise and is looking particularly bright and well. ~ „ Instead of the rising two-year-Old Notium accompanying Link Divine to Australia next month the LySander—Makepiece youngster is to be given an Opportunity / prove himself before being sent over, and present intentions are to give him a race at Marton on September 7 and at Avondale a fortnight later.

Fast work at the Hawera racecourse yesterday morning Was Confined to a gallop over three furlongs by J. Browns’ pair, Carfex (Hawkes) and Arouse (Flower). Jumping off at the six furlongs post, the pair sprinted to the three furlongs post in 41s, with CarfeX half a length in front. Arouse is engaged at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting, to be held at Marton next Wednesday, and is to go by train On ’Tuesday morning. Carfex is bddked to leave for the Manawatu meeting on Friday. R. Brough’S Just So filly (D. O’Connell) sprinted a couple.of furlongs down the back in 28s. The’track was heavy, rain having fallen during the early hours.

Solid work on the sand track was performed by Soloist, Gold Gleam, Lowenberg, Bay Sand, Corowa; Golden Hair, Panloff, Just Off and Bantry. Oriel, Ruri, the Colossus—Munitioners gelding Glenholm and several yearlings’ were given easy exercise on the inside oval. The youngster by the young Limond sire Resinous from Mollah is visiting the tracks, and being the first of Limond’s grandsons to make en. appearance he attracted attention. He is a well-turned colt with Limond characteristics.and has been well done, so he should not be long in shaping up. On Wednesday morning Panloff (Grindlay) and Just Off (Conway) went a round of the schooling hurdles, jumping satisfactorily. Mr. La Pduple has disposed of his old ’Chaser Waitaunaha to a Palmerston North hunting enthusiast, and intentions are to give the old fellow another trial if he stands sufficient preparing. DIFFICULT TASK AUSTRALIAN TREBLE What has been accomplished once is again possible, and as the Melbourne Cup, in addition to the two Derbies, has more than once been won by the same horse, bookmakers who wish to bet on that treble this year would have no difficulty in finding cllehts, writes Pilot in the Sydney Referee. A majority would select Young Idea, who, though he has 7.9 in the Clip, dites not sOem to be a chit that would find the difference between that and 21b or 31b less a serious matter. However, the A.J.C. Derby should tell a lot concerning his chances Of success in the Victoria Derby and Melbourne Cup. His probable A.J.C. Derby opponents include Garri6, Valiant Chief and Legatee. As a rule ’any three-year-old has to be taken on trust as a two-miler, but whatever wins the Derby at Randwick is likely to immediately become one of the most popular picks for the Melbourne Cup, Trivalve was the last to win the treble, and between his two Derby wins he was beaten in the Caulfield Guineas by Avant Cotfrier. He was a true stayer, and the mile was short for him. Poseidon was another who brought off the treble, with the Caulfield Cup for good measure. The following year he repeated his win in that race, but, with- 103 a second Melbourne Cup was beyond him. Prince Foote was another great stayer that landed the treble, and, many years earlier, Grand Flaneur did the trick. Those mentioned were exceptional three-year-Olds, and this year it will again take something high-class to add the Melbourne Cup to the two Derbies.
