HAWKINS’ FINE WIN

AMATEUR ROAD CYCLING. RESULT OF INGLEWOOD RACE. Riding a finely judged race, the limit rider, A. Hawkins, scored a meritorious win in the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s road cycle race round Inglewood on Saturday, a distance of 28 miles. The results are: A. Hawkins 13Jm. 1, R. Rundle 104 m. 2, S. Julian 10£m. 3, G. Halford Bm. 4. Also started: I. Murray, T. Castell 6m., 1. Peters, M. Chatteris Im., C. Mana, C. Hawkins scr. Fastest time: C. Hawkins Ih. 19m. 1245. The field was the largest of the series and the weather was ideal for cycling. A. Hawkins again set off from the limit, followed three minutes later by Julian and Rundle. The next to start was George Halford riding alone, to be followed a couple of minutes later by Castell and Murray. M. Charteris and I. Peters were the next to toe the mark, followed a minute later by the scratch men, Mana and Hawkins. Tire stiff climb over the ridges on Egmont Road told on Alf. Hawkins and he was caught by Rundle, who had broken from his co-marker Julian. Rundle and Hawkins were together at Egmont Village, followed half a minute later by’ Syd. Julian, who looked likely to catch the leaders a little further on. The next to reach Egmont Village was Halford, who was followed five minutes later by Murray and Castell. M. Charteris and Peters were next, followed a minute later by the scratch men, Hawkins and Mana. Meanwhile Julian had caught the leaders at Inglewood and Alf. Hawkins found the pace too hot and dropped off. Halford was riding a splendid race and on his catching Hawkins the two worked well together and overhauled the leaders, Rundle and Julian. Charteris and Peters were holding time at Inglewood and two miles past Inglewood caught Murray and Castell, who were showing signs of tiring. Charteris was unfortunate to puncture at Waiongona, which necessitated his withdrawing from the race. At this point the oneminute men had gained ground on the scratch men, but when Charteris pulled cut the combination became too slow. C. Hawkais’ co-marker Mana also met with misfortune at Waiongona, having to pull out of the race owing to a puncture. Misfortune overtook Castell at Lcpperton when he hit Murray’s wheel. However, he was able to re-mount and continue the race. The leading bunch at Bell Block comprised Hawkins, Rundle, Julian and Halford, and at this stage of the race it could be seen that the placings would come from this bunch. Peters and Murray were the next to pass through Bell Block, but both were riding very sluggishly. Castell was making a desperate effort to overhaul them butcould not make much impression. C. Hawkins was riding a stirring race. Losing Mana at Waiongona did not seem to worry him, and he kept a solid pace all the way from Lep’perton. It could be seen at the golf links that he had made up the lost ground and that the fastest time honours were his. The spectators at the finishing point witnessed a fine finish. Alf. Hawkins, R. Rundle, S. Julian and G. Halford all came down the straight abreast. A. Hawkins judged his sprint well and a chain from the finish he gradually pulled away from the bunch to win by a length. Rundle was next, beating S. Julian by half a wheel, with Halford a length away fourth. Murray and Peters were the next to appear. There was a keen struggle between these two, and they crossed the line in a dead-heat. They were followed by Castell, who was rather stiff after his crash. The scratch man Hawkins was the next to arrive and cross the line with 12 seconds to spare for fastest time. ' The officials for the day were: Starters, Mr. D. Saunders and Dr. G. H. Thomson; time-keeper, Mr. Hawkins; road steward, Mr. T. Tremlett. Next week’s race will be from Avenue Road to Rugby Road and back, a distance of 32 miles. The race will be the final of the second series. The pointe for the second series are: M. Charteris 10, C. Hawkins. 94, A. Hawkins 8, R. Rundle 3, T. Castell 2, I. Peters 2, S. Julian 1, I. Murray 1, G. Halford and T. Barlow £ each.
