POTATO PRICE RISE
KEEN INTEREST IN THE MARKET. FARMERS INDISPOSED TO SELL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Chriscthurch, Last Night. Almost excited interest lias centred in potatoes during the past few days and quotations have risen substantially. It is very difficult to establish the accurate market price for sales are reported to have been made at from £7 to £8 2s 6d f.0.b., a rise of £1 for the week. There seems to be no undue anxiety on the part of northern merchants to acquire potatoes, although there has been a slight improvement in the number of inquiries coming forward. The market has been mainly built up by the trade. Farmers show their same indisposition to sell and, when they do, allow only very small lots to go out. A boat oi Wednesday took north 2600 sacks of table potatoes from Lyttelton and 1700 from Timaru, a total that would seem to be enough to keep the Auckland market quiet. Farmers still apparently expect that there will be an outlet to Australia but quotations from Sydney this week indicate that the market there is weakening. In the meantime quotations to farmers are about £6 5s on trucks with a little more for Dakotas, for which there is better inquiry. The rest of the grain and produce markets are very quiet indeed.
