HAWKE’S BAY HUNT CLUB

HANDICAPS FOR ANNUAL RACES. Handicaps for the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meeting have been declared as follow:— ,

FIVE WINS IN A ROW

ARCTIC KING’S GOOD FORM It takes a really good hack to win five races in a row these days but Arctic King has now performed this feat and what is more has won all his races like a tradesman at the right end. His last two successes have been gained at the present Trentham meeting and the class of hack encountered at this meeting is the best in the Dominion. On Thursday he gave Rebel Lad, who is 'considered to be perhaps the most promising hack in the South Island, nine pounds and a decisive beating in the Petone Handicap. He will now have to do his future racing in open company but he should be able to more than hold his own. Arctic King, is a three-year-old gelding by the Paladin horse Rabbi from the Kilbroney—Snowstell mare Snowland, thus inbred closely to a very successful Stonyhurst family, for Rabbi is also a descendant or Snowstell, has been racing in great form recently, and he is doing splendid service for the young Trentham trainer W. J. Wood, who holds him on lease. He takes time to settle down in his races, but once he is properly under way it would require a good horse to go with him. He is a typical stayer who may before long be achieving fame in much better class.

FROM A GOOD FAMILY THE TRIAL PLATE WINNER So many good horses have won the Trial Plate at the Wellington winter meeting that special interest centres round Collision, who scored in attractive fashion on Thursday after accounting for the hack six furlong event on the opening day. Collision is a big five-year-old chestnut entire son of Colossus and the AberbrothOck mare Arbroath, the dam also of Polar, Huntingdon and Hunting Star, and he is raced on lease by Mr. C. G. Ancell, of Gisborne, for whom he is trained by J. Olsen at Hastings. After being left at the post when strongly fancied at Hastings recently, he came out to make amends the following week at Napier, and yesterday’: was his first start since. He began racing only’ this season, and scored his opening success at Pahiatua in the autumn, when he attracted notice by his powerful appearance. A POPULAR GATHERING WAVERLEY POINT TO POINT The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s annual point to point is always a popular gathering and an attractive programme has been drawn up for this year’s fixture which is to be held next Saturday. There will be three steeplechases, a heavyweight, a lightweight and an- open event. In addition there is a pony race, a ladies’ hunting competition and a pony jumping event. All nominations close with the secretary, Mr. J. C. Gray, Waverley at 8 pirn, on Monday. CHANCELLOR SOLD AUCKLAND TROTTING EVENTS. WORTHY LIGHT’S PREPARATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to News). Auckland, Last Night. . Negotiations for the Sale of the Auckland pacer Chancellor, which have been in train for several days, reached a conclusion to-day, when Messrs. E. G. and F. A. Bridgens disposed of the Peterich—Black Gold . four-year-old to Mr. G. J. Barton, Dunedin, and the horse will go to J. C. Dunlevay’s stable at an early date. Chancellor, who has been a public favourite at Epsom, has won 11 races during his two, three and four-year-old career for £1550 in stakes. He is in splendid order and should find many opportunities m the South Island. Worthy Light, the best stake-earner of the season at Auckland, ti-day rejoined the Takanini stables and will be given a preparation for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. . F. J. Smith has completed the purchasing of a property at Takanini and will, commence making a grass and dirt track immediately.
