HAWAIKI BALL
GATHERING at KAIMIRO. GREAT SUCCESS ACHIEVED. The Kaimiro Tennis Club’s Hawaiki ball last night was an outstanding success, the hall being packed to capacity. Those present included many visitors from a distance, as far as Stratford and Opunake. '* ' The hall, which had been arranged in th© farm ©f a realistic Maori whare with a proper thatched roof, presented a picturesque appearance. The effect was further enhanced by strings of coloured electric lights and many flowers among the thatch. Tree ferns and greenery round th© walls and Maori warriors carved out of ponga gave a fitting setting. The supper room was decorated with tree ferns and the tables with vases pf camellias. The greater part of the supper was donated by ? th© women of the district. The special feature of the dance was ihe hakes and poi dances by the Maoris from Puniho. The poi dances by the girls under Chief Kipa Manu showed outstanding ability, while the hakas under the leadership of Mr. W. Mr son were also carried out in spirited and characteristic style. Th© novelty dances displayed great initiative arid ingenuity. The Stuart Gordon elimination Monte Carlo, which was judged on imitation of farmyard animals, proved both popular and amusing. The success achieved was a tribute to the reputation that the committee has built up as a result of its previous dances.
The winners of the competition dances were Miss Myrtle Reading and Mr. Parfitt (Monte Carlo) and Miss O’Byrne and Mr. J. Messenger (mystery Gay Gordons). Splendid music was provided by Hooker’s orchestra, and the masters of ceremonies were Messrs. Read and L. Schicker. The committee consisted of Mesdames H. Shoemark, J. McAdam, L. Gopperth, Misses H. Gibson, H. Julian, Messrs. H. C. Read (chairman), R. Smith Chon, secretary), N, P. Gibson, S. Julian and F. Irvine.
