The diplomatic world continues to be absorbed in the problem of averting an Italo-Abyssinian war. M. Joseph Ave? nol, Secretary-General of the League . of Nations, ha? already conferred with Signor Djno Grand?, Italian Ambassador, and the French and Polish Ambassadors. strictest secrecy is feaing observed everywhere, but it is reported with reserve that Signor Grandi is tentatively proposing as a solution that Italy be granted a zone in the Abyssinian hinteriand of Eritrea and Italian Somaliland jn" which she would exercise political control. Behind this a further zone of Italian influence would be recognised by Abyswfla, In which Italy would Haye a free hand in rehabilitation and the suppression of slavery. 'lt is believed the present consultations everywhere are centring primarily on the immediate procedure. An official Abyssinian communique expresses no surprise at the Italian attiture at the Conciliation Commission proceedings, which failed, says the Addis Ababa” correspondent of the Times. . Tfie communique says that Ethiopia has always desired a peaceful solution, and it. demands tfie immediate convoca? tion of the League Council. Abyssinia has also sent Notes to the British,' French and Belgian Ministers, expressing a hope that it will no longer be necessary, to oppose the supply of munitions necessary for the defence of the integrity and independence of Abyssinia. ' Tfie Foreign Office spokesman, says a Tqltio cable, denies the report cabled yesterday that the Japanese Emperor is trying to avert hostilities between Italy *apd Abyssinia.
