PROMINENT VISITORS

GOVERNORS AND MINISTERS. Men and women prominent in many walks of life have visited the Hawera school during the past 60 years, and the names of many of them are recorded in the log books of the school. There are many people living at Hawera and in other parts of New Zealand who will recall even the first recorded visit, that of Sir William Fox and the Hon. Mr. Rolleston on February 11, 1881. Among others who visited the school were: His Excellency the Governor, December 12, 1890; the Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, January 16, 1891; His Excellency the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, March 29, 1900; Herr W. Schwiegershausen (cycling round the world), October, 1902; Edith Howes (authoress of fairy stories), August, 1918; the Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education, July, 1919; Lieutenant H. J. Laurent, V.C., July, 1919; and Lieutenant J. G. Grant, V.C., October, 1919 (both of Hawera and both former pupils of the school).’
