“WRONG; HUMILIATING"
SUSTENANCE CONDITIONS
REPORTING AT LABOUR BUREAU.
MAYOR OF AUCKLAND’S OPINION.
“OPPOSED TO PUBLIC INTEREST.”
By Telegraph—Press Association.. Auckland, June 22. “The conditions under which men on sustenance are required to assemble at the Labour Bureau are far from satisfactory and steps have been taken to bring them under the notice of the appropriate authorities at Wellington,” said the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, in an outspoken statement to-day. “Excluding for the time being an examination of the merits or demerits of the system of reporting, I have no hesitation in describing as wrong and humiliating the nature of the accommodation provided for the men Who are compelled to report.” The Mayor said that on visiting the bureau to see the conditions he could not escape the feeling of depression. - In bleak weather during the winter it must accentuate tLe misery of the men and undermine their self-respect. “I fail to see the necessity for this further embitterment of the lot of those of our unfortunate fellow citizens who have to assemble regularly at the bureau,” he Said. “As. Mayor, of the city I would be failing in my duty if I closed my eyes u> the position. It is creating an unnecessary spirit of unrest and is strongly opposed to the public interest.”
