EASTERN WINS AGAIN

RUGBY LEAGUE MATCHES RAHOTU FADING AT FINISH. GOOD FOOTBALL" OF FORWARDS. Eastern Suburbs, mainly because of the hard work Of its 3 forwards gained Victory by ! 15 points (three tries, one converted, - and two penalty goals) over jlahotu -4 (two penalty goals) at Western Park on Saturday. In the first part of- the game, -playing with a wind, the visiting combination appearedjto be the superior team, but the remainder of the game saw its downfall.. The greasy ball, however, accounted for a godd deal. Of the poor handling of both teams. . Each team gained a fair share of the ball, Bishop and ,C.. Leatherby dividing the honours with; Davison, centre man in 'tire front row for Eastern Suburbs. The match was hard especially in the forward division and good tight rushes by the home pack were seen. C. Leatherby played his usual good game both in and out of the scrum and led several attacks against Suburbs. On the other sidd* Carroll was the leading forward, Davison and Lawrence, lacking the opportunities for the open play in which they shine. Tamatea, at first five-eighth'for Rahotu, was prominent but marred his good work by starving his ’ back '• line of the ball. King was the better of• the fullbacks, although it must be taken into consideration that H. Lawrence was playing his first game of the season. L. Moorhead, despite his lack of speed, proved himself an asset as wing threequarter for Suburbs and Pui on the other wing made himself conspicuous by the way he avoided wofild-be tacklers. Henderson made a good half-.back, getting his line away with the minimum of delay and his try, when he went through Rahotu backs with the ball at his feet, showed what «. change of tactics can x do. Eastern were without the. services of Wayne, G. Moorhead and Tumai. The teams were:—

Eastern Suburbs: H. Lawrence; Pui, Lash, L. Moorhead; Bedford, Muschamp; Henderson; Carroll; . Burke, Williams; Hicks, Davison,. A.- Lawrence. Rahotu: King; Lewis, ; Stohr, Coffey; Tito, Tamatea; Robinson;'W. Leatherby; J. Conroy, Kahui, C.. Bishop, C. Leatherby, Thomson. ' On receiving .the. ball from .the kickoff, Eastern, Suburbs began a.'back movement that was marred, by a forward pass. Rahotu secured from the scrum and in the resulting , play, just inside Suburbs’ half-way Hicks was" penalised for mot playing the, ball- and;. using the wind well, Tamatea sent the ball over to make the score’ 2-nil' in the . first minute of play. 'L. Moorhead supported by Davison .started a rush that came to an abrupt stop When, the winger -was' forced out well up in Rahotu’s territory. The visitors’ replied with’a passing rush to which L. Moorhead' put an end by running up fast and putting his man out five yards from the line. Several dangerous attacks oh the home team’s line ended with the ball being forced. Eastern Suburbs secured near half-way and Henderson picked up 'smartly and sent to Muschamp, who dummied . his way through and sent a long pass to Lash, who was tackled as he received the ball. Because of H. Lawrence missing a long kick from King, the Sulbur ■ team were pilt in a. dangerous position, as the’ opposing forwards broke away. The position was relieved when a mis-kick sent the ball over the line. In a resulting scrum the home forwards were penalised for. lifting but Tamatea failed, with an easy kick. Eastern Suburbs attacked vigorously, .-and the .backs -managed' to get away in a promising move that was stopped by Tito. . • . , Led by C. Leatherby, the Rahotu forwards, using dribbling tactics, were within' an ace of going. - over several times..’ z The. hard work of Lawrence,. Davison and Carroll repulsed the attack until the whistle'Went for half-time. For' the first part of. the second spell Eastern Suburbs’ kept the play in its opponent’s territory, the . forwards of both .teams struggling. for an opening , until Rahotu was penalised. Bedford equalised with, a fine kick. Play was tight on' both Sides but showers of rain made the ball, hard to handle. Two more free, kicks to Eastern followed inquick succession, one - going Wide and the second just clearing the bar. Securing the ball from a scrum, Robinson, Rahotu’s' half-back,- sent a snappy pass to Tamatea. The ball went to Tito, who fooled his opponent,’and’passed the ball aS H. Lawrence tackled him, but Stohr was thrown out. Suburbs secured the leather immediately afterwards. Carroll took possession and dashed through the opposing backs and went on to pass to L. Moorhead, who, unopposed, went over easily. Bedford missed the kick.

Spurred by the reverse, the visiting backs, started. by* Tamatea, had their rivals in a tight corner but Lewis lost possession. Coffey took the leather, ran around and passed to Tamatea, who cut in. The ball went to Tito, Stohr and to Tamatea again, but he went solo instead of passing to his. winger, thus losing a good chance of scoring. Vigorous forward work brought play back into Rahotu’s ground, where Henderson dribbling the ball fhf’du'gh Rahotu players kicked infield to beat the fullback, and followed up fast to score the best individual try of the day. Bedford’s; kick went wide.

Rahotu rushed play to the corner. From almost straight ,in front Rahotu was awarded a free kick when A. Lawrence was caught off-side. . Tamatea made no error.

Using the wind to advantage Muschamp kicked high and Eastern forwards forced King out in the corner. Hard nicking play followed until Williams gathered in a greasy ball 10 yards oft the line and crashed through only to lose the ball, but Burke dropped on it for an easy try. Bedford converted.
