LOWER GRADE POSITIONS CHANGES IN THE LEADERSHIP. OLD BOYS HEAD NORTH JUNIOR. Saturday’s series of junior games in North Taranaki, which marked the openin jf of the second round, saw a change in the leadership. Old Boys, which defeated Star, displacing Tukapa, Tukapa having been defeated by High School. All the matches were closely contested and scores were low. Not one of the teams scored more than ix points. Old Boys scored six points against Star, which did not open its scoring account, while High 'School in the curtain raiser to the senior game at Pukekura Park defeated Tukapa after a very close and interesting game by six points to three. School is a point behind Tukapa in third position, but has a match yet to play. At Urenui Turangi defeated Urenui by six points to three, leaving Clifton, who had the bye, in fourth place. . The opening series ■■ of matches in the second round of the third grade saw Tukapa E maintain the lead by defeating Clifton at New Plymouth by 11 points to 3. Alls the scores were from tries. McGiven, Bullot and White scored tries fpr Tukapa, one of which McKenna converted. Lepperton and Tukapa A were also successful -nd retained their positions as runners-up three points below the leader, Lepperton, which defeated High School by nine points to nil, is virtual runner-up. As the country team has a match more to play than Tukapa A, School as the result of the defeat is in fifth place, eight points below the leader. School has three matches more than Tukapa to play but Saturday’s de- ; feat has greatly minimised its chances of securing championship honours. Star had a comfortable win over Urenui and is now in fourth place, with every chance of drawing level with the runners-up. The conclusion of the second round of matches in the fourth grade saw Tukapa defeat School A after a hard struggle at Sapders. Park by six points to nil and thus draw level with School in the lead. Playing against the wind in the -first spell, Tukapa scored a try. School forwards Had cleared after Tukapa had hotly attacked,, Maslin, the Tukapa fullback,. gathered up and after a good run scored in the corner. School A is still four points in the lead from Tukapa, though Tukapa has an advantage in that it has played one game fewer. School was weakened by the absence of three of the best players. The game was mostly coni' fined to the forwards. Tukapa monopolised the scoring in the first spell, Pillette kicking a penalty goal from an easy position. Near the close of the spell May scrambled over from a loose scrummage near the line and Pillette converted. In the second spell Turnbull, who had been playing well, scored another try for Tukapa.
