MARATHON “WHEELBARROW PUSH.” A STRENUOUS UNDERTAKING. What is frequently referred to in this country as the “Wheelbarrow Derby” in volves the traverse of a section of Australian. terrain by no means- easy. It is a feat imposing upon the passenger a difficult trial of endurance. In order to lessen the severe nature of the task as far as possible the wheelbarrow is fitted with the latest Dunlop wheelbarrow pneumatic tyre, with a diameter of four inches, and inflated to a pressure of 101 b, while the interior of the barrow is fitted with, a Dunlopillo cellular rubber cushion. These together materially eliminate the jolting and vibration to which the passenger, Mr. Evans,- is subjected during the journey. The journey itself includes a 1 3-5 miles descent of Buckland Gap with its grades of from 1 in 6|, 1 in 10, and 1 in 15. This is followed by a stretch of road, at fjrst undulating, then level, with a surface fair to good. The next stage is 15 miles of good level going to Porepunkah (922 ft. above sea level). This is followed by a journey to the Eurobin Falls bridge, marking the commencement of the stiffer grades up the mount. From Porepunkah to this point the road rises 700 ft. in just over six miles, a total distance of 28.6 miles from the starting point. From there on to Mt. Buffalo the road rises about 3578 ft., an average rise of 195 ft. per mile. The surface of this climb, with its varying grades of from 1 in 12, 1 in 15, and 1 in 20, is usually at this time of the year soft and heavy in parts owing to the prevalence of mists, rain and snow. From this it will be appreciated that both participants in the challenge “push” are being called upon to withstand an endurance test of considerable strain, even though the going is considerably lightened by the Dunlop wheelbarrow tyre and the Dunlopillo interior fitting of the wheelbarrow.*
