BILLY BOYS’ WORKSHOP

A SMALL This week, again by special request, I am giving simple instructions for making a small book-case with a glazed door. You will see by the diagrams that the book-case is three feet high, and has three shelves, each of which is eighteen inches long and seven and a quarter inches wide. For the sides, two ' pieces s of planed half-inch wood, three feet long and eight inches wide, will be required, the lower end of-bach being cut away to the shape shown .in the diagrams. This can easily be done with a keyhole saw. On each piece mark carefully the. positions of the shelves, to the measurements given in diagram A. Make sure that the shelves are exactly the same.

length, then fix them in place with three screws at each end, driven in through the sides. Countersink the holes for the screws, and fill them in afterwards. Between the two sides, at the top, fix a cross-piece, B, which is two inches wide and three-quarters of an inch thick. The back, C, is a piece of three-ply, fixed with small screws to the book-case sides and the backs of the shelves..

For the top, use a piece of five-ply wood carefully cut to size so that it overlaps the front, back and sides of the book-caSe by half an inch'./ Stick the top in-place, then glue strips of angle moulding D,D, in the front and back corners underneath to strengthen it.

The door frame is ’made with four, pieces of groved moulding, one and a half inches wide and, three-quarters of an inch thick. Each end of each horizontal rail is cut to form a tongue, as shown at E, to fit in the grooves in the upfights. Carefully mark the horizontal parts of ths frame , for correct length before sawing them, so that when finish(ed the frame fits nicely between the sides; of.:the book-case, as shown in the first diagram. The piece of glass for the door must be cut to fit in the groove in the frame before the comer joints are glued together. . Hinge the door to the side of the book-base and fit a suitable knob, as shown in the first diagram. - Give . the finished case two coats of varnish stain in apy desired shade. The Hut Carpenter.
