COURT OF REVIEW
, UNIFORMITY OF POLICY. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. The functioning of the Court of Review, established under the Rural Mortgagors’ Final Adjustment Act, and presided over by Mr. Justice Johnston, was referred to by the Minister of Justice, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, at Auckland. The Minister said that the court, which was sworn in on May 13, held its initial meeting forthwith, when matters relating to procedure were discussed. The court, he said, had not , yet commenced its active functions, and the judge was at present taking the Supreme Court sittings at Gisborne. “As the duties of the court, until the expiry of the budgetary 'periods provided for in the Act, will be confined mainly to dealing with appeals against the granting of stay orders, it is proposed, in terms of section 5, that the court shall take over jurisdiction under the Mortgagors and Tenants Relief Act in respect of all rural mortgages throughout the Dominion,” said the' Minister. “This should make for uniformity of policy and relieve other courts generally from the extra pressure of work arising under the mortgage relief legislation.’’ It is provided that there shall be paid io each member a salary of £BOO a year, beginning on the date when the oath or affirmation required by the Act is taken or made. Each member travelling on the business of the court, and necessarily absent from headquarters at night, will receive an hourly travelling allow? ance for the time during which he is so absent at the rate of £1 10s for each day of 24 hours commencing at the hour of departure from headquarters. In computing the time • for which an allowance is payable a fraction of an hour, if less than half e an hour, will not be taken into account, but half an hour or more will be reckoned as one hour. When a member'travelling on the business of the court leaves and returns to headquarters on the same day actual and reasonable expenses only \will be paid.
