NGARUAWAHIjA DEFEATED

VISITING TEAM AT INGLEWOOD. HUNT AN OUTSTANDING PLAYER. A fast and willing Rugby League game pleased a big crowd at Jubilee Park, Inglewood, yesterday, when the wood senior team, mainly due to the' superiority of the forwards in. loose work, gained a good margin of points over a strong Ngaruawahia team, the score being 22 points (four converted tries and one field goal) to .8 (two tries, one converted). . Hunt was the outstanding player, followed by the two Arnolds, while Bakarat was the leader of the visitors. Inglewood forwards were. superior in loose work and by this means gave their backs most of the opportunities. During the half-time interval two schoolboy teams played a game for a cup donated by Mr. P. Nops. Blue won in a play-off after the senior game, the scores being five all when the whistle blew in the first game. For Black Leo James scored and Mattie Radi ch converted, Dave Feaver scoring and con-\ verting for the winning team. . Ward secured the winning try after 10 minutes play. The Mayor, Mr. J- Gibbs, made the presentation, stating that the cup would be held by the team until it was beaten. The senior teams were:— Ngaruawahia: C. Hill, R. Hayward, M. Inglewood kicked off against the sun and a run of long kicks availed neither side. Hunt gained ground from a free kick and thereafter strenuous moments were seen. Both teams were playing great football. Arnqld broke round the scrum arid handed to‘Ward, who threw a bad pass which let F. Bakarat through to hand on to Buckley, who. was stopped by Hall. Wells handed to Bakarat and Hayward, but the tackling was sound and play came back to Ngaruawahia territory. Ward secured from Arnold and dummied several opponents. He was collared on the line but secured a good try. Arnold converted. Arnold sent to Surrey and when dangerous he was well taken by Molesworth. Play cgme back to Inglewood territory in a neat passing movement, Hunt extricating himself from a difficult position. Inglewood backs set off and a scrum was formed close to the Ngaruawahia line. Ward secured and’Hunt ran in from the full-back, evading would-be tacklers and touching down close in. Arnold converted putting Inglewood 10 points in the lead. J. Wells intercepted and punted through, the team following smartly, but again Hunt was equal to the occasion. Molesworth secured from the loose and clever work was seen by him, Bakarat and Wells. Play went back to the visitors’ territory but Hill saved clgverly and a long punt sent his side into Inglewood territory.'; From a punt- Hayward followed, up fast and beat his Opponents to the ball. The kick, failed. The reverse eplivened Inglewood and L. Arnold cut through prettily to hand to R. Arnold and Ward. Still attacking Inglewood secured from , a scrum and the ball travelled to Surrey, who passed in to Ward, Ward handing to Hunt. Cutting through, Hunt handed to Patterson, who touched down under the posts. The movement was brilliant. ■ INGLEWOOD FORGES AHEAD. From a centre kick by Hall ■ Ngaruawahia secured and half the team ran upfield unopposed. Tackled by Hunt, Bakarat passed to Hayward and Buckley. The ball came back to Bakarat, who touched down and converted his try. Inglewood 15, Ngaruawahia 8. Shortly afterwards Bakarat retired for a time, having received a knock. Goodwin replacing him. Inglewood maintained its aggression and kept the visitors hemmed in. J. Wells, who was getting great help from his scrum, sent to V. Balcarat, the ball travelling cleanly to the wing. The skipper returned to the field and. immediately cut tout his man and sent to Mcßurney and Buckley. Fumbling lost an opportunity.' SuiTey was away for Inglewood but long punts sent the team back. Attacked strongly, Ngaruawahia proved the soundness of its defence.'Hunt was playing close in and kicked a 'brilliant field goal, seeming to shoot the brill under the armpits of the oncoming forwards. J. Wells, playing good football behind thei scrum, retired injured and was-replaced by Crosby. From the scrum Ngaruawahia was away with clean passing, but Surrey snapped at a loose ball and cleared. Hall followed fast to snap up and force his way through, but his pass was not accepted.

The game concluded with the prettiest movement of the day. Near the Ngaruawahia line Inglewood secured and Hunt ran in as extra five-eighths, cut out his man and handed to Larmer, who had followed from the scrum. Larmer scored unmarked. Arnold converted. A junior Ngaruawahia team ran away from the Inglewood junior team, winning by 33 points to nil. Ngaruawahia showed superiority in all departments from the kick-off an.d in quick tithe, was hammering at the'line. Wright was nearly over but Cottier divI ed to catch him. Shortly afterwards the same player picked up from the loose and raced over. Goodwin did not convert. Wallbank picked up from a scrum and side-stepped several players to run in easily, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead. The game was lively but the visitors were handling too cleanly and despite good• defensive tackling always'had the odd man to pass to. Scott scored in the corner. Clark was playing soundly for Inglewood and continually stemmed movements. Wallbank ran through again and Smith added the conversion points. Ngaruawahia 14, Inglewood 0.
