PERRY AND VON CRAMM

final of french tennis GERMAN’S DEFEAT OF AUSTIN. PERRY WINS IN STRAIGHT SETS. BRILLIANT SEMI-FINAL GAMES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, June 2. Von Cramm (Germany) defeated Austin (Britain) and Perry (Britain) defeated Crawford (Australia) in the semifinals of the French tennis singles. Ten thousand people were present. The weather was hot and dull. Von Cramm won a great match through superior fitness. Austin was exhausted in the fifth set but struggled on gamely, although he lost accuracy. The German employed a powerful, destructive service and maintained the pressure. Von Cramm rose to great heights in the fifth set. His splendid service and superior physique helped him to score a decisive win.

Crawford began his match against Perry in light rain. Crawford won his service and Perry also won his service after protracted rallies which gave promise of a long, hard match. Each man then took the other’s service. After a beautiful display of fast driving Perry won the fifth game to love, Crawford twice netting difficult volleys. The Englishman established a lead at 5—2. He often beat Crawford with superbly angled. drives. Rain began to fall steadily and play was stopped for ten minutes. The light then improved and Perry continued to take the- initiative,, forcing the pace. Crawford, however, staged some astonishing rallies, but his form was spasmodic and the match generally disappointing.'.' ' The Australian Hopman says Perry won because he was the better man. He and Crawford' have played each other sufficiently to know each other’s weaknesses. Perry rarely failed in his plans. PERRY’S BUOYANT SPIRITS. The Australian Press Association says the Australian was never self-confident while the Englishman’s buoyant spirits and skill rose superior to the handicaps imposed by the miserable conditions. PeTry won by . greater initiative and mobility and more consistent stroke play. Playing with amazing accuracy and aggression, Von Cramm defeated McGrath (Australia) in the quarter-final. McGrath’s form was excellent. Most of the games were closely'contested, but Von Cramm was more accurate and his ser- . viceswas forceful. He has every chance of retaining the title. Crawford (Australia)■ disposed of Bernard (France) with consummate ease. Crawford was in great touch and with masterly stroke-making sped through three sets in fifty minutes. There was an -unexpected result to the two and a-half hour battle between Austin (England) and Menzel (Czechoslovakia). On one of the few occasions in his career Austin won by superior stamina after his opponent led two sets to one. Austin won by forcing tactics and remained comparatively fresh, while Menzel in the fifth set was staggering about the court. Perry (England) eliminated Boussus (France), a much more experienced player than Bernard, with even greater ease than Crawford beat Bernard.
