HOCKEY AGAINST WELLINGTON. MARGIN OF TEN GOALS TO ONE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington,' Last Night. In a great match which delighted. 12,000 spectators the Wellington hockey representatives were yesterday beaten by the Indian touring team by ten goals to one. Wellington played a fine defensive match and against the finest hockey .combination in the world performed very creditably. In the first half Wellington held the visitors to a score of two to one, but thereafter the Indians ran through the team and commenced piling up the points. India scored first when Rup Singh turned a centre from the left wing into the net. Wellington’s goal came a few minutes later when Ferguson scored with a long shot. The Duly other score of the first half was the result of a brilliant solo effort by Dhyan Chand, who cork-, screwed his way right through the defence.
Contrary to the usual practice the Indians were using flank attacks, which Wellington’s excellent defence was ableto smother. In the second half, however, the Indians bombarded the goal continuously and Wellington really did well to limit its score to ten. For India Rup, Singh scored two goals, Dhyan Chand five and JVells- three.
As a curtain-raiser a team representing the Wellington-Ladies’ Hockey Association beat a Maori Federation team by four goals to none.
