RIVAL ELECTION CANDIDATES. KEEN INTEREST AT NEWCASTLE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11.35 p.m. Sydney, June 2. Unusual interest was evinced in the by-election on Saturday for the Newtle Federal seat, which was rendered vacant by the death of Mr. David Watkins, because of the candidature of rival Labour parties, Mr. D. O. Watkins, Federal Labour, son of the former member, and Mr. J. E. Smith, the nominee of the State Labour Party led by Mr. J. T. Lang. The third candidate was a Douglas credit supporter, Mr. H. Sykes. The latest returns indicate that although the margin between Messrs. Watkins and Smith is at present narrow, Mr. Watkins is expected to win.
