INCREASED RETURNS
f TAXATION THROUGH CUSTOMS. f • NEW PLYMOUTH IMPROVEMENT. An increase in all returns except those : for excise duty was shown in the Customs Department collections at New Plymouth in May. The increase in Customs was £2105 14s 4d for the month and £6250 2s 2d for the first five months of the year. The May , figures for petrol tax disclosed an in- ’ crease of £lll7 3s, the figures for the five months being £3584 4s 6d in excess of those for the corresponding period of . 1934. The increase in the sales tax for May was £404 0s 9d; the yearly figures showing an increase of £1153 16s 7d. Excise duty was £BO 6s 6d more in May, 1935, than for the same month of 1934, and the figures for the first four months showed a drop of £676 5s 9d when compared with the figures for the corresponding figures of 1934.
