FINE RECORD OF SERVICE.

The tributes paid this week to the work and leadership of Archbishop Averill by members of his own and other churches at Auckland would be heartily endorsed by many residents of Taranaki. For many years the archbishop was the leader of the Anglican Church in the northern portion of Taranaki, and from the personal point of view there was much regret that a progressive church movement necessitated the termination of that relationship. Archbishop Averill has completed 25 years of service as a bishop. His occupancy of that high position has been marked by charity and goodwill towards those who do not belong to the branch of the Christian Church of which he is the leader in the Dominion and by wise administration maintenance of principles in his share of church government. His term of office has extended over years that have seen the challenging of beliefs and principles which at one time seemed beyond question. In material affairs also the economic difficulties have affected church enterprise, and that they have not reduced zeal for its work is a tribute to such leaders as Archbishop Averill and others who see in the application of Christian principles the only way to world recovery in spirit and estate. In social affairs and in community efforts for the common good Archbishop Averill has given of his best endeavours, and the hopes expressed at Auckland that he may have many years of usefulness ahead will receive emphatic endorsement in the Taranaki districts which at one time formed part of his diocese.
