GALLOPS AT HAWERA

. SOME VISITORS ARRIVE CLUB’S PROSPECTS BRIGHT. WAITAUNAHA NOT STARTER.

(By

“Limited.”)

There is every indication of the Egmont •Racing Club’s winter meeting, commencing on Saturday, given fine weather, being a big success. The secretary, Mr. A. K. Fyson, has received intimation from a large number of sporting patrons from all round the North Island of their intention to be present, and a specially large contingent is expected from the Auckland province by the special excursion train arriving on Saturday morning. M. Carrol arrived yesterday with soughal, Orac, Lionheart and Sirona. Royal Secret was also brought down, the five horses coming, by float. Most of the visitors are due to-day. The following riding engagements have been announced:— i/ W. Grindlay: Gowanlea. / K. Chote: Stanchion and Bantry, second day. B. Sullivan: Beau Star. W. McDowell: Ruaform. A. Jenkins: Taura Lad, Lady Ronald, C. Cole: Carfex. P. Burgess: Colossal, Chile. G. Duncan: Lady Eka. W. Sheehan: Cawbeen, Full Throttle, Passing Fancy. W. Rennie: Copey. D. Bush: Arctic Star. R. W. Savage: Navaho, Bonnie Vale, Kurapae and Seamond. S. Wilson: Darecourt, Debut Yesterday’s Track Work. General pace work was the order on the Hawera tracks yesterday morning. Carfex, Ruri, . Onewhetu, Stanchion, Copey, Aga Khan, Passing Fancy, Fries- * land, Golden Hair, Panloff, Lady Eka, Colossal, Cawbeen and Instalment were all given useful exercise. ' Final gallops of the Hawera horses will be performed to-day. Another capital schooling bout was performed' by Ruaform (Conway) and Gowanlea (Grindlay) over a round of five fences. Both jumped well, but honours went to Gowanlea, who did exceptionally well, covering more ground than his rival. Waitaunaha Sore. After doing a good working gallop on Tuesday Waitaunaha’s old infirmity found him out, and he will not be persevered with as a racer. Many would have liked to see Waitaunaha take his place in the steeplechase on Monday, and sympathy is expressed with Mr. Lepouple, Who has taken a lot of pains with the old fellow, who is in splendid bodily health and as lively as a two-year-old. A magnificent jumper, Waitaunaha should make a first-class hunter.
